The Community Service project was created to educate our students about community outreach. In the beginning, the students were required to complete ten hours of community service within our community. The students were provided a contact list of local businesses and organizations that could use their support, and we brainstormed other ideas on how to give back. For those students who did not have transportation to volunteer anywhere or parent support, we offered ideas on how they could give back at school or at home. For example, we had students who stayed afterschool and assisted the teachers, and we had students who helped their neighbors or read to their siblings at night.
As a culminating event, we had the students invite special family and friends to an event during the school day. The students displayed their projects (journal entries, posters, and brochures about what they had achieved) and shared that information with their guests. We had the students create a paper chain with each ring representing the different activities they completed, and we "hooked" them all together in the end. It was amazing! The students were so proud to walk down the sixth-grade hall and see the different things each of them had done.
